Blocking access in BIOS

To block access to the computer boot or change BIOS settings, password protection system is used. This system is effective only until the sophisticated user will not go inside the system unit and turn off BIOS batteries. You may also have to produce these actions after you forget the password for access.

For setting passwords “Supervisor password” and “User Password” commands (Set Supervisor password and Set User Password) can be used, which are in the main menu of the BIOS settings . In some BIOS versions, these commands can be placed in the Security menu. The first command sets the password for the administrator, which has full access, and the second – the users with restricted access.

Protect your computer on the BIOS level

Protection of the information nowadays plays a huge role. However, if the BIOS can only protect your computer from unauthorized access by not very sophisticated users. Generally, protection in BIOS – it is rather a relic of the past rather than a real need. While on the other hand, the protection at the BIOS level can put some barrier for unconscious internal BIOS settings changes by curious children. And thus protect your computer from “spontaneous” overclocking.

In the arsenal of BIOS there are several possibilities of protection: password protection of computer boot, password protection of changing BIOS settings, hard drive boot sectors protection, floppy disk lock and read-write hard disk lock.

BIOS Menu

It is possible to get to the BIOS settings window, which is also called “BIOS Setup”,only at the start of the boot process, before self-testing at the time as the boot table and the boot program will be called from the operating system boot-media sector. To enter the BIOS settings window, mostly it is used Delete key, however, in some cases, other keys can be used, such as F1, F2, etc. Required key name can be found in the message “Press Del to Enter Setup” or “Press F2 to Enter Setup”, which occur immediately after the memory test. Sometimes a message might look like this: “Del: Setup”.¬†If you have brand computer, the input window in the BIOS settings can be different from the usual. If everything was done correctly, you get into the settings window BIOS, and if not, then system start begins, which can be interrupted by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination or the Reset button on the system unit case. BIOS settings window, usually provides a menu with a list of topics with the BIOS commands Some BIOS types support operating with the mouse and have the view of folders which store commands.

Your Computer BIOS

BIOS of Your ComputerWhat is BIOS? Abbreviation of BIOS (Basic Input Output System) indicates set of base programs for equipment checks during computer launch, loading operation systems and also for data exchange between devices. Basic Input – Output System is stored in a constant read-only memory (ROM), thanks to it software may be loaded during computer load. Software of Basic Input – Output System (BIOS) affects the total performance of computer and mostly remains unavailable for users.

BIOS Manufacturers

Nowadays, two BIOS manufacturers can be found: Phoenix and American Megatrends companies. First company produces BIOS as AWARD and PHOENIX trademarks, second – AMIBIOS. Also you can found BIOS, which is manufactured by MR company. Some huge manufacturers of motherboards and other periphery, for example, Intel and Acer, also produce BIOS. Such BIOS versions are used only for some motherboard models of these manufacturers, but very often you can see on different motherboards of one and the same type the native BIOS, as well as BIOS of third party manufacturer.
Different brands of BIOS have natural differences, in spite of the same challenges that lie before them. This is primarily due to the possibility of manual setup and consequently, with the provided instructions.

The most “weak” in this regard is the BIOS PHOENIX – it has a minimal configuration capabilities , access to which is very difficult. Typically, this BIOS is used in multiprocessor systems, workstations, and on some motherboards produced by Intel.

As with any popular software product, BIOS of one brand has several different versions. This is understandable, with growth opportunities of the motherboard, the opportunity of their management is increased. Also, just like any software program, BIOS firmware is constantly updated,¬†optimizing and expanding the baseline parameters laid down in it. This, of course, does not mean that you have to update BIOS every week – typically, the computer works well on the pre-installed software, and update associated with not only with some difficulties, but with the risk of “losing ” the motherboard.

Choosing between on-chip and peripheral audio and video cards

Nowadays many motherboards have integrated audio and video. As a result, price of the board increases, but this compensated by fact that there is no need to buy discrete audio and video cards. The choice between integrated sound card and discrete version is rather complected. First, using a simple audio codec AC 97 (Audio Codec) standard significantly decreases the sound palette even in compared with old sound cards for ISA-bus. Furthermore, this embodiment consumes the part system resources, as the sound is processed by the processor. Therefore purchasing a motherboard with built-in two-channel (index 2.0) CODEC AC 97 is only justified in the budget set.

If you have a discrete sound, built-in audio codec must be necessarily disabled, because no matter from which device, you get the sound Рwith a sound card or a the built-in codec Рthe system resources will be eaten by both devices. To turn off the built-in audio codec in the BIOS Integrated Peripheral section, AC 97 Audio parameter must be set to Disabled. On the other hand, many manufacturers integrated into its motherboards very decent or even audio codec processors. Examples of such integration can serve Analog Device codecs, used in Intel processors or DSP (Digital Signal Processor) chipsets in nVidia. Thus a full five or six (index 4.1 and 5.1 respectively) channel sound card is built to motherboard, which can be better than most of the cards. Naturally, with such configuration there is no need to use a discrete expansion card. It is not even recommended to insert such card for avoiding the holding of such required system interruptions.
