Blocking access in BIOS

To block access to the computer boot or change BIOS settings, password protection system is used. This system is effective only until the sophisticated user will not go inside the system unit and turn off BIOS batteries. You may also have to produce these actions after you forget the password for access.

For setting passwords “Supervisor password” and “User Password” commands (Set Supervisor password and Set User Password) can be used, which are in the main menu of the BIOS settings . In some BIOS versions, these commands can be placed in the Security menu. The first command sets the password for the administrator, which has full access, and the second – the users with restricted access.

Different brands of BIOS have natural differences, in spite of the same challenges that lie before them. This is primarily due to the possibility of manual setup and consequently, with the provided instructions.

The most “weak” in this regard is the BIOS PHOENIX – it has a minimal configuration capabilities , access to which is very difficult. Typically, this BIOS is used in multiprocessor systems, workstations, and on some motherboards produced by Intel.

As with any popular software product, BIOS of one brand has several different versions. This is understandable, with growth opportunities of the motherboard, the opportunity of their management is increased. Also, just like any software program, BIOS firmware is constantly updated,¬†optimizing and expanding the baseline parameters laid down in it. This, of course, does not mean that you have to update BIOS every week – typically, the computer works well on the pre-installed software, and update associated with not only with some difficulties, but with the risk of “losing ” the motherboard.

Choosing between on-chip and peripheral audio and video cards

Examples of such integration can serve Analog Device codecs, used in Intel processors or DSP (Digital Signal Processor) chipsets in nVidia. Thus a full five or six (index 4.1 and 5.1 respectively) channel sound card is built to motherboard, which can be better than most of the cards. Naturally, with such configuration there is no need to use a discrete expansion card. It is not even recommended to insert such card for avoiding the holding of such required system interruptions.
